1Consider your overall business strategy
what type of firm do you want? Are you planning to grow organically? Your overall business strategy is the context for your brand development strategy, so that’s the place to start. If you are clear about where you want to take your firm, your brand will help you get there.
2Who are your target clients?

Your next step is a messaging strategy that translates your brand positioning into messages to your various target audiences. Your target audiences typically include potential clients, potential employees, referral sources or other influencers and potential partnering opportunities, to name a few of the usual suspects.

While your core brand positioning must be the same for all audiences, each audience will be interested in different aspects of it. The messages to each audience will emphasize the most relevant points. Each audience will also have specific concerns that must be addressed, and each will need different types of evidence to support your messages. Your messaging strategy should address all of these needs. This is an important step in making your brand relevant to your target audiences.Develop your name, logo and tagline.

For many firms, a name change is not required. But if you are a new firm, are undergoing a merger or are burdened with a name that no longer suits your positioning, a name change may be in order. Even if you don’t change your firm name, a new logo and tagline may make sense to better support your brand positioning.

Remember, your name, logo and tagline are not your brand. They are ways to communicate or symbolize your brand. You must live it to make it real.

And don’t make the mistake of showing the new logo around internally to get a consensus. The name, logo and tagline are not for you. They are for your marketplace and should be judged on how well they communicate, not how much the partners like them.

Different Types of Business Strategies

A small company can use a number of business strategies, depending on its situation. For example, new companies may face different challenges than companies that are more established. Therefore, the business strategies they implement may be different from those of key competitors. Four types of business strategies include the growth, product differentiation, price skimming and acquisition strategy.

Growth Strategy

A growth strategy entails introducing new products or adding new features to existing products. Sometimes, a small company may be forced to modify or increase its product line to keep up with competitors. Otherwise, customers may start using the new technology of a competitive company. For example, cell phone companies are constantly adding new features or discovering new technology. Cell phone companies that do not keep up with consumer demand will not stay in business very long. A small company may also adopt a growth strategy by finding a new market for its products. Sometimes, companies find new markets for their products by accident. For example, a small consumer soap manufacturer may discover through marketing research that industrial workers like its products. Hence, in addition to selling soap in retail stores, the company could package the soap in larger containers for factory and plant workers.

What is the brand positioning statement?

A positioning statement is a concise description of your target market as well as a compelling picture of how you want that market to perceive your brand.

Write a Positioning Statement

The purpose of writing a positioning statement is to ensure that all of your marketing activities for a customer group are consistent and clear. (And it saves you tons of time in the long run.) Initially, focus on writing a positioning statement that’s only used internally. In the future, you may end up using it for other purposes such as in your marketing collateral. But if you throw that into the mix the first go around, crafting a strategic statement that makes sense may be more difficult. Ready to jump in?

To write your positioning statements, follow these steps:

  1. Select the target customer group you want to focus on.
  2. Develop a list of needs your customer group has that you intend to meet (if not already included in your customer profile).
  3. List your product/service’s benefits that uniquely meet these needs.
  4. Use the lists of customer needs and product/service benefits to finish this sentence: When this customer group thinks of my product or service, I want them to think: ____________________.
  5. Evaluate your positioning statement by making sure it’s simple, clear, and consistent.
  6. Get the word out to everyone by consistently communicating your positioning message in everything your company does for this customer group.

For mass communicators, the information strategy process will help you:

  • think through the message’s purpose, context, audience and key topics
  • identify and select a manageable portion of the topic which needs to be examined
  • develop a method for in-depth examination of a segment of the topic selected
  • identify appropriate potential sources of information
  • select effective techniques for researching the topic
  • determine a vocabulary for discussing your message analysis, information gathering and selection process with others (colleagues, supervisors, critics, audience members. etc.)
  • save time by helping you avoid wading through masses of information that may be interesting, but in the end, not very useful for the message task
